Final Photo Brainstorming Ideas Reference Photos In-progress photos Reflection Questions
1. I decided to choose the Hollywood sign for my piece because I thought it would be an interesting mix of nature as well as a man made landmark. I thought that it would be fun to represent the nature, the sky, and the Hollywood sign through different magazine pieces. 2. I used different values on the mountain to represent the dark parts and the light parts of the nature from the reference photo. I also used text cutouts in the sky to contrast between the sky and the clouds. I used the same text cutouts in the Hollywood sign to give it a unique touch that stood out compared to just plain white. I think my porportions between the features in my collage were mostly accurate. 3. I used the texture of the magazine pieces to give the collage a realistic look, but yet still be abstract. 4. I used ripped pieces of magazine paper in the sky to give it a unique texture and to show the texture of the clouds. I used a lot of thin strips in the mountains to show the small parts of nature and a really detailed texture. 5. I feel that I used many values to add to the transition of colors in my piece. I used more variation of color in the sky, but for the mountains I used greens that mostly transitioned from dark to light (from left to right). I feel like I was able to create depth in the middle ground, foreground, and background by creating darker shadows on the mountains and darker parts of the sky. 6. I believe that I had good craftsmanship throughout this piece. The majority of the pieces are small and add a lot of detail to the piece. The contrast in colors between the mountain, the sky, and the Hollywood sign makes each part of the collage stand out. 7. If I were to redo this project, I would want to mostly improve the sky. I think I had too many contrasting colors of blue, so I would like to make them flow and blend together more. I also would pick text cutouts with more white and less words to make them be a better representation of clouds.

1. I used Prismacolor Colored Pencils to create my piece. The most helpful techniques that I used were using light layers when blending colors and using a combination of colors to get the right color. This was helpful because my piece had a lot of different colors that would fade into each other, so I was able to blend the colors better and make it look more realistic. 2. Layering the colored pencil was very important because it helped me to blend colors and add dimension to the shapes in my work. I was able to add shadows, highlights and change the vibrancy of the colors I used by using layering. 3. I think that my piece was successful through utilizing multiple elements of design. I used color throughout my entire piece. I used proportion to show the varying sizes of the details of the coral. I used value to show the highlights and shadows of the coral and to add dimension. 4. Color choice was super important to my piece. I decided to use vibrant colors to really show to unique colors in the coral. My reference photo had a lot of unique colors that were significant to making the coral look unique. 5. I used my knowledge of Georgia O'Keeffe for this piece by being abstract and by picking a small part of nature for my piece. Georgia O'Keeffe's pieces often depicted small and unique parts of nature. She also often painted in an abstract way and used many shapes and colors. 6. I think I had good craftsmanship for this piece. Although the piece turned out smaller than I originally planned it to be, I still put a lot of hard work and effort to create my piece. I think that the texture and colors from using the colored pencils made my piece look realistic and similar to my reference photo. I think that I used good color pencil techniques to create my piece. 7. If I were an art critic, I would think that my piece did a nice job representing the photo that I chose. I think I could definitely improve upon some of my colored pencil skills to make the piece look even more realistic, but I think the porpotions and colors on my piece worked really well. 8. If I were to do something different, I would've made my piece larger. Because of time restraints, I had to make my piece smaller than it was orignally sketched out to be, but I would've liked to be able to see how the full size piece would be. 9. I think that learning to use colored pencils has been really significant to my development as an artist. Before learning the proper techniques and practicing with colored pencils, I did not know how to create good artwork with colored pencils. It has inspired me to buy my own set of Prismacolor colored pencils and continue to create colored pencil pieces. Final Drawing (below) 1. In this project, I used a mix of stippling, cross hatching, hatching, and random line for my pen techniques. I decided to use stippling to give the background more darkness around the edges, but fading lighter as it goes towards the center. I used cross hatching to give the Earth in the background more dimension. I used hatching in my piece to show the different values of the Earth, as well as giving the puzzle pieces a three dimensional look. I also used random line for some of the backgrounds of the puzzle pieces to make some of them look unique and stand out. 2. In my piece, I used 1 point perspective to show the puzzle pieces gradually getting smaller into space. The perspective is important in this piece because it helps it to show how the puzzle pieces are a part of/connected to the Earth and it also creates more open space to show the background of the drawing. 3. Texture is very important in my piece. You can see how the dfferent parts of nature all have different textures, like the splash of the puddle, the water with the frog and the dolphin, and the texture of the mountains. You can also see that the continents of the Earth have texture to show their dimension. 4. Value is so imortant in this projet because it helps to show the depth, dimension, and features of all the items drawn. The value from stippling the frog emphasizes its body features to make it look three dimensional. The values in the craters on the moon help to show their depth. 5. I believe that I used good and technical craftsmanship while creating my piece. I was very detailed and made sure that each piece was unique and represented a part of nature found on Earth. I also used a lot of control while stippling the background the make sure that the borders/corners were very neat and similar. 6. If I recreate my piece, there are a couple things I would like to change. I wish that some of the backgrounds of the puzzle pieces were neater and more controlled. I also wish that my stippling came down from the corners a little darker before it gets lighter in the center. 8. It is very important to understand the concepts for the pen techniques that we learned in class so that our piece is able to look neat and as best as possible by using detailed and controlled pen techniques. 9. As a growing artist, this project really helped me to think in a new way and learn a lot of important techniques. This project helped me think creatively about the best way to show my ideas and draw new things. I was also able to practice using value without color and using pen techniques to create those values. In this assignment, I took three photos to make forced perspective photos. For the right photo, the Coke can appears to be the size of the larger Coke bottle. In the middle, the candle appears to be lit by a lamp that is much larger in size. In the left photo, the cat appears to be sitting in a human hand. I did this assignment to learn more about composition and taking photos from a forced perspective.
Top left: A pen value chart that shows 10 values of hatching, cross-hatching, stippling, and random line.
Top middle: A cube, cone, cylinder, and sphere created by stippling. The pictures on the left are printed examples, while the pictures on the right are the ones drawn with pen. Top right: 9 spheres that show different textures and shadows drawn with pen. Bottom left: 9 cubes that each show different textures and how light is shown on different sides of the cubes. bottom middle: long cylilndrical figure that shows different textures and light differences shown by value/shading. I did these assigments to practice drawing different pen techniques and values of different shapes and textures. In this assignment, I used graphite pencils to draw a value chart. I also drew a sphere, a cube, a cylinder, and a cone. This assignment helped me practice value and shading with graphite pencils.
1. First, I took several pictures of my object, which was my cat's toy basket. I took photos from several different angles and then chose one as a reference for my sketch. I made a few first sketches and a final sketch and then worked on a final drawing. 2. Composition is very important to the success of my drawing. Taking the picture from an certain angle added an interesting element to my piece. Drawing the object and background to match the composition of the photo I took was also very important. 3. To find the different values in my object, I tried to notice the difference in colors throughout my photo, even though I was only drawing with pencil. I also tried to look at the shadows and highlights throughout my photo to see the different values. 4. I think that there are many different values throughout my drawing. The shadows in the hardwood flooring show dark values, while many of the toys in the basket are dark and light values. I also tried to use different values when drawing the shadows of the toys/depth of the basket in the photo. 5. I think my artwork is executed neatly. Some of my first sketches weren't as detailed, but I believe that my final piece shows more detail and a range of value. 6. I think that learning the techniques was important before starting my drawing. Learning the difference between different drawing pencils and how they can be used was very helpful. Trying to learn how to draw different textures was also something that was helpful with drawing my piece. 7. I think that drawing this piece helped me grow as an artist in many different ways. I think that I learned more about the drawing process and composition of photos. I also learned more about drawing a range of values and how to draw an item more realistically. 8. Some challenges that I faced were drawing the fur on the stuffed animals and time management. Drawing the fur was a challenge because it was very different from most things I had drawn before. However, I practiced new techniques that helped me improve my drawing. Time management was also a challenge for me because it was hard to find time to work on my drawing between homework and extracurriculars. To overcome this, I tried to manage my time better and find points throughout the day to work on my drawing. Final Drawing - left In progress photos - below (7) Reference photos - above (5) I had several brainstorming ideas for this project. My ideas were:
Record player Cabinet of cups Cord plugged into an outlet Cat toys in basket Pack of hair ties Board games in closet Pedal on my keyboard Water bottles on a shelf in the fridge Chess piece on chess table Bottle of soap Dreamcatcher hanging up Coasters on a table Snowglobe Door stopper The mouse for a computer In this assignment, I took 9 photos of an object from 9 different angles. This assignment was done to learn more about different compositions and creating interesting photos.
In this assignment, I had to draw a shoe with laces, a hand, a portrait of a friend, and a photo in 1 point perspective. My favorite drawings are the shoe and the hand because I think they have the most range of values and look the best.
